How many things are in the Internet of Things? 6.593 billion in 2015 – says Bosch

The term varies a bit depending where you ask: “Web of Connected Objects” (France) ,”Industrie 4.0″ (Germany)
and who you ask: “Industrial Internet” (General Electric), “Internet of Things and Services” (Bosch), “Internet of Everything” (Cisco) – but basically means the same: the transformation of life, business and production by not only connecting (traditional) computers and computer systems using the internet protocol but, well, (literally) everything.

So how many things will be in the Internet of Things ? Well, Bosch comes up with an excitingly precise number: There will be 6.593 billion devices in the internet by 2015, according to Bosch Software Innovation (and nearly 26 billion devices by 2020 according to Gartner).

If this number is correct or not doesn’t actually matter so much. What matters is that the Internet of Things is already happening, right now – and that this is just the beginning. We security professionals have to be ready to think out of the box once more – traditional security strategies wont work in the Internet of Everything.
